Emulate battery charging with Otii Ace Pro

Emulate battery charging with Otii Ace Pro

November 28, 2024

Listening to our customers’ challenges and project requirements when designing embedded systems is at the compass of what we do. Your feedback directly shapes the development roadmap of the Otii Product Suite. Now, you can emulate battery charging!

Our latest FW release for Otii Ace Pro enhances emulation of battery discharging to now also include battery charging! Using this new feature, the developer can develop and verify charging algorithms.

How it works?

For developers working with rechargeable devices, we know one critical challenge is accurately emulating both the discharge and charging phases of a battery.

With this update, the Ace Pro now seamlessly switches between emulating a battery during discharge and mimicking its behavior during charging, all without user intervention. Whether you’re designing for IoT devices, consumer electronics, or any rechargeable device, this upgrade adds a key layer of testing and validation to your development process.

Here’s how it works:

  • In Power Box Mode, Ace Pro acts as though it has a 1-ohm internal resistance, starting to sink current. Meaning that for each 1mV above set voltage, Ace will start sinking 1mA.
  • In Battery Emulation Mode, Ace Pro emulates the internal resistance of the battery profile during both charging and discharging phases. This means you can now verify charging phases, ensuring your circuitry behaves exactly as expected.

This functionality activates automatically. When Ace Pro detects a voltage above the set level, it steps in to stabilize it. This kind of seamless integration not only simplifies your workflow but also enables more precise testing without additional setup.

What does battery charging emulation mean for your engineering team?

For hardware and firmware developers, as well as test engineers, this enhancement transforms how you approach battery emulation and validation. No longer limited to discharging scenarios, you can now:

  • Evaluate device performance when DUT exceeds the set voltage limit after connecting a charger.
  • Test and validate charging algorithms.
  • Ensure your charging circuitry works as expected.

By bringing both discharge and charge emulation together, the Ace Pro empowers teams to create low-power electronics designs that are more robust and efficient, reducing development cycles and eliminating higher maintenance costs.
